Dennis Altman [The Homosexualization of America NY: St. Martin's Press 1982] writes that ". . . the belief that homosexuality is somehow a reflection of a blurred sense of masculinity / femininity remains central to the Western imagination" (p. 55). John Gagnon and William Simon [Sexual Conduct Chicago IL: Aldine 1973] also refer to the stereotype of the gay man as a "limp-wristed drag queen" (pp.134-5)
